Your Tribe Matters

Question:

Could the company surrounding you affect progress towards living a Healthy Buzz Life?

Answer:

Yes, but there is a balance (of course). You can have those in your life that cheer you on to eat healthier and move more (and other wellness things), but also those that could care less if you are a wiz at cooking brussels sprouts and signed up for another 5k “fun” run.


Your people can and will affect your lifestyle. Research shows that our habits and even body composition can be affected by our communities. Individuals who have someone in their life that are working toward similar goals may be over 70% more likely to succeed than those that don’t (wowza). Knowing community support is crucial, here are a few strategies to keep you striving toward reaching your goals and aspirations.

Support Tip #1: Find An Adult Cheerleader

Ultimately, 70% is a huge advantage. You are going to want to share your ups and downs and have someone going through it right by your side (and keep you in check, this is my favorite thing to do with friends). Most things in life turn out better with a partner, and even better with a cheerleader to keep pushing you forward one new goal after the next.  

Support Tip #2: Remember That You Can’t Get a New Family

We all have different views on how we should be living, what we should be eating, how we spend our time and money, etc. As you embark on creating and changing your lifestyle behaviors, share them positively, invite others to join, but don’t put negative pressure on others to “be like me” and don’t let others do it to you. We are all doing what we think is best for us, and still loving and supporting our family and friends who do things differently is quite alright.

Support Tip #3: Stick to Your Purpose

Through the process, your purpose for seeking to accomplish your goals can become blurry, so plan for setbacks. We talked about finding your purpose here.

How to Choose a Goal That Makes Sense

In our last post, we laid out an action plan for setting realistic and measurable goals in 2019 based on your personal aspirations and what you want to accomplish. But what if you don’t even know where to begin? It’s hard to create a framework if you have no idea what’s possible or what makes sense based on your lifestyle. Today, we’re going in to detail on how to choose a goal that will serve you well.

Find Your Purpose

The first step to figuring out how you want to improve is to first find your purpose. Your life’s purpose is a major factor in the “why” behind any goal or intention, but have you ever taken the time to think about exactly what it is? If you aren’t familiar with the work of Victor Strecher, I would highly recommend checking out his TED Talk (and if you want even more, I would also recommend his book on this subject - Life on Purpose). It’s fascinating to learn more about the research on how much having a purpose influences our health and longevity. Here are some questions you might consider in determining yours:

  • What do you love?

  • What comes easy to you?

  • What do you love sharing with others?

  • How do you want to impact those around you?

  • What brings you joy?

  • How do you describe yourself to others?

Consider the Dimensions of Wellness

While most of us probably think our health primarily depends on the physical component (like fitness and nutrition), there are in fact several “dimensions” that ultimately determine our total state of wellbeing. You can find many similar images online (each with a slightly different take on the dimensions) but the general gist is that if you thoughtfully foster each piece of the puzzle, your life will be more well-rounded and meaningful.

Consider the Dimensions of Wellness when creating goals

Using the graphic above, consider each aspect of your life along with where you might want to focus energy and improve over the next year.

Create a Personal Vision

Once you have an idea of what area of life you want to focus on, now’s the time to think big. Think about what you want life to look like 3, 6, 12 months from now. Brands create vision statements so they have something to reference when making difficult decisions and guess what? This strategy works well for individuals too. This article outlines some fantastic questions to ask yourself when crafting your own, along with some elements that make up a quality vision.

Write down your vision on the goal planning template we shared in our previous post so you have something to reference when things get challenging. From here, you can start creating specific goals that help you get to where you want to be!

Goals Beyond Overnight Abs

Studies have shown people who take even a few seconds to put their goals on paper are 5-10x more likely to achieve them. To get started exploring general tips for goal setting checkout a previous article on Re-Shaping Our Goals. Now let’s get to work setting YOUR GOALS with these 5 easy steps.

Step One: What do you want to accomplish?

  • Start writing, keep going…more…now circle your top choice.

  • Ask yourself if this is an outcome goal (one you cannot actually control) or a behavior goal (hint: these are good, you can control your behavior!).

  • For example, I want to get toned arms could be re-worded to “I want to start a weightlifting program” or I want to lose 15 pounds, could be re-phrased to, “I want to cook dinner at home 4 nights per week.”

  • This not only gives you control of your goal, but begins to make it more specific and believe me, the outcome goals will naturally not be far behind.

  • Now look at the goal you circled. Can you re-frame the goal to focus on a behavior? Be specific, if you need help run it by a friend or email us!

Step Two: Check-in with yourself. Why do you want to accomplish this?

  • What would it feel like if your dream with a deadline (goal) came true?

  • How would it change your life? Is your goal supporting your overall health and happiness for the right reasons?

  • Would it help you be a better person, uplifting yourself and others around you?

  • Again, does your goal acknowledge a behavior you are trying to change verses an outcome you are striving to reach?

  • If yes, then you are on the right track, if not, lets head back to step one. How could you re-frame your goal to support your why(s)?

Step Three: Is it measurable and realistic?

  • Your goal should be challenging but realistic. For example, “I want to start a weightlifting program” would shift to “I want to increase the number of push-ups I can do by 5 each month, allowing me to reach 20 push-ups by March 1, 2019.”

  • This puts parameters and short term goals into the mix with your overall goal. These short term goals will serve as checkpoints that you are on the right track, while making the experience manageable and safe.

  • It’s challenging to set short term checkpoints, but think of your final destination and how you can get there. Ask for help if needed, we are all in this together.

Now we got it: “I want to increase the number of push-ups I can do by 5 per month, allowing me to reach 20 push-ups by March 1, 2019.”

Step Four: Write It All Out

  • Each day, week, month until you reach your goal, outline your plan of action. Below are a few templates I find helpful, but we are all unique humans that can’t fit into a generic box. Use what works for you and ask for support and feedback from a professional like Healthy Buzz!

Step Five: Find a Tribe

  • If your goal is a secret, or you plan to do it all alone, chances are you won’t be as successful. Find as many people as you can to check-in and support you through the journey.

  • Every day is an opportunity to live your best self and we are rooting for you!
